PΜCK

In a ranking of Poland's most picturesquely located cities, P這ck would surely top the list. This old town, full of magnificent monuments, is perched on a nearly 50 meter high slope over the Vistula river and dominates the Mazovian plain.

P這ck - the oldest city in the Mazovia Province, was one of the most important administrative and culture centers during the early Piast monarchy. Under the reign of W豉dys豉w Herman and Boles豉w Krzywousty P這ck gained a particular significance. At that time the city served as permanent residence of Polish rulers and the capital of Poland. In the Cathedral Basilica, dating back to the 12th century, there is a sarcophagus of two Polish rulers - W豉dys豉w Herman and his son Boles豉w Krzywousty. There is also a copy of a famous Romanesque P這ck Door.

Right beside the Cathedral, there is a Diocesan Museum with a unique exhibition of sacral art. Located nearby Mazovia Museum is famous for its collection of art nouveau - the biggest one in Poland. P這ck is also famous for the oldest high school in Poland (82 hundred years) which is referred to as "Ma豉chowianka" and 180 years old P這ck Scientific Society. The collection of Zieli雟ki's Library, constituting an integral part of Society, consists of 300,000 extremely valuable volumes, including old prints, incunabula, graphics, and maps.

The centerpiece of P這ck is Old Market Square surrounded by several interesting mansions, and in-between them the Sanctuary of the Divine Mercy erected in 19th century. In this place in 1931 sister Faustyna Kowalska (canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2000) had her first vision of Jesus the Merciful.

At the same time historical P這ck is the city of modern industry. One of the largest companies in Central Europe, POLISH OIL CONCERN "ORLEN" S.A. - a magnate of liquid fuels' and petrochemical products' market, has its headquarters here. American "king of jeans" Levi Strauss and CNH Polska - the leader of combine harvesters' manufacturer - built their factories in P這ck.

One of the Plock attractions is the Zoo with its largest and most impressive collection of reptiles in Poland. An unquestionable trump of the city is the direct vicinity of evergreen forests and lakes of the Gostyni雟kie Lake District.
